ACTIVITY
Diurnal
These fish are covered by large scales. Their dorsal and anal fins are almost fused with the caudal fin. Adults are silver and juveniles have blue highlights and a yellow/orange bar. They have 2 barbels on the lower jaw, and the upper position of their mouth allows them to capture their prey (mostly fish) while swimming underneath them; they can even jump out of the water to feed on large insects. They are able to adapt to environments with low oxygen levels.
Interesting facts
Males carry eggs, larvae and fry in their mouth for about six weeks.
