They are benthopelagic fish that live in pairs or small groups. They can present different colourations, such as green, blue and red stripes, and brown. They have black bands running vertically across their body that are not identical in all colourings. They feed on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter. They lay hundreds of eggs on stones or plants; the two parents defend the eggs and larvae.
