They are gregarious fish, forming groups on the surface, and depending on the moment they can be aggressive or calm. They inhabit the slow flowing waters of streams and marshes. They are capable of catching small aerial insects but also feed on worms and crustaceans. Females are larger than males.

They have powerful muscles in their body (representing 25% of its body weight) that allow them to carry rigid pectoral fins and make them function in a wing-like manner.
