Diurnal
This blenny lives in rocky bottoms up to 30 m deep. It is a solitary and very territorial species. Their body —elongated, rounded at the front and compressed at the caudal peduncle— has a variable colouring: it can take on ochre, green and red tones with dark transversal stripes to camouflage with their surroundings. It is very obvious when they are frightened, as they present a whitish colouration on the face.
Their mucous skin, without scales, protects them from dehydration. Their eyes are located on the top of the head, above which emerge two long, branched tentacles. Their mouth is wide, with teeth, and shaped like a suction cup to cling to rocks and avoid being swept away by sea currents. Their lips are fleshy. They feed on invertebrates (polychaetes, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, etc.).
Interesting facts
The males watch over the clutch and oxygenate it regularly until the larvae hatch a month later.
