It is a communal species that can be found singly or in pairs along rocky shores and coral reefs. They may also be found in estuaries and inner reefs up to 25 m deep. They are territorial and pearly white with five vertical orange-yellow stripes. On the fourth stripe they have a black spot intended to confuse predators.

They have an elongated mouth that can reach up to 3 cm.
